    Land clearing is more regulated than cutting down a single tree in your backyard. In unincorporated Lee County, clearing a vacant lot or larger acreage can require a vegetation removal permit. Protected trees and wetlands add more rules.

    Gopher tortoises are a protected species in Florida and are common on sandy upland lots in places like Lehigh Acres and Buckingham. Burrows generally have to be surveyed, and tortoises relocated under an FWC permit, before clearing. Properties near wetlands or canals may also involve the South Florida Water Management District.
