    Grinding vs. full stump removal

    Stump grinding is what most homeowners need. A grinder chews the stump down below the soil surface, typically several inches — enough for sod, mulch or a new plant nearby. The major roots stay in the ground and break down over time.

    Full stump removal digs out the stump and root ball. It’s more disruptive and usually only needed for construction, a new foundation, a pool or a driveway where the old root mass would get in the way.

    Who handles stump grinding?

    How deep is a stump ground?

    Typically several inches below grade, which is enough for sod or mulch. If you plan to plant a new tree in the same spot or build over it, say so — deeper grinding or full removal may be recommended.

    Will grinding damage my irrigation?

    It can if lines run through the stump area. Flag sprinkler heads and lines before the visit and mention irrigation in your request.

    Can I get old stumps from past storms done at once?
